Fergie has always been independent. When meeting new people, she would appear aloof– preferring to sniff around the yard hunting for ground squirrels. It was this quality that made it difficult for potential adopters to connect with her.  The staff knew that Fergie was an absolute love-bug, but it was hard to prove it.

Bob Williams of Idyllwild was undeterred. Bob came to Living Free looking for a companion. He had previously owned two rescue dogs, who had sadly passed away. He specifically was looking for a dog in our kennel that was overlooked. Bob was immediately taken by Fergie’s story. He knew that he’d be able to give her a good home and trusted that eventually she would bond with him.

Bob adopted Fergie on July 31st, 2020. During the first couple of days, Fergie was a bit nervous in her new surroundings.  She did not want to come inside the house and spent her time on the porch looking in.  Bob was very patient and waited for Fergie to take her time. He even devotedly slept on the couch, in view of Fergie on the porch, to make sure she was not alone through the night. Eventually, Bob was able to encourage her to come into the house.

Bob shared, “Fergie now comes in the house and shares the couch and bed with me. She wants to be with me and gets extremely excited when I come home.  She gives me loving kisses.  She is becoming a wonderful companion.”

Now that she’s got the lay of the land at her new home, Fergie is enjoying herself. Bob explains, “Fergie loves to chase the squirrels and chipmunks.  She also likes to dig holes in the yard to lay down in and watch the wildlife. She even dug a hole under the shed where she enjoys being.”

Every Saturday, Bob shares a pancake with Fergie. “I take three, she gets one.” Bob and Fergie have become the best of friends, proving that the independent Fergie is a big softy at heart. Bob explains, “Wherever I go Fergie is right behind me. She follows me everywhere and has to be with me wherever I am.”

Thank you so much Bob for taking Fergie into your heart and home. She waited an awfully long time to find her loving family. We are so incredibly happy for you and Fergie.
