A Memorial Service at Living Free Animal Sanctuary

“These precious animals we honor today all had something in common.  They mattered.  They were important.  They were loved.  Whether they lived most of their lives with us or were gone in the blink of an eye, they touched us.  They are a part of us.  And will always be.”

Jill Tucker

Living Free recently hosted a heartfelt memorial service, bringing together our compassionate community to honor the lives of cherished animals who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Volunteers, staff, and attendees united in a touching tribute filled with love, cherished memories, and a shared dedication to animal welfare.

The serene sanctuary grounds provided a tranquil setting for the occasion, embraced by gentle breezes and warm sunshine. Our maintenance team member, Scott, gave a beautiful flute performance which resonated through the air, creating an atmosphere of peace and unity.

The memorial service garnered a profound turnout, illustrating the lasting impact these animals had on the lives of those who knew them. Attendees, ranging from long-time staff members and board members to brand-new volunteers, sought solace and support in each other’s company. Their collective love for animals forged a sense of togetherness during this emotional time.

Jill Tucker, our amazing Volunteer Coordinator, delivered a heartfelt eulogy that encapsulated the significance of each precious life lost. She emphasized that every animal, whether having spent years or fleeting moments at the sanctuary, held great importance. She shared poignant anecdotes of each animal:

Dogs: Martha, Angel, and Blossom

Bunny: Rose

Cats: Miss Friday, Mr. Sylvester, Joseph, Jingle, Q, JoAnn, and Quill

—each one left a mark on the hearts of their caregivers.

During the ceremony, the ashes of the departed animals were tenderly scattered, symbolizing their return to nature. Attendees paid homage by adorning the ashes with delicate rose petals, a loving gesture of remembrance. Wind chimes, adorned with plaques honoring the animals’ unique lives, gracefully hung from trees, filling the air with melodious whispers.

The service concluded with a poignant moment of unity as attendees kindled flameless candles, symbolizing the millions of animals who have passed without experiencing the warmth of a forever home. The flickering flames served as a powerful reminder of the animals still awaiting their chance to be cherished.

The memorial service at Living Free was not solely a somber occasion but also a celebration of the profound bond between humans and animals, marked by love and compassion. It left an indelible impression, reaffirming the sanctuary’s unwavering commitment to honoring the lives of these remarkable beings and inspiring continued devotion to their well-being. By cherishing the memories of these animals, Living Free remains an unwavering beacon of hope and compassion, extending a nurturing hand to those in need.

As Jill so eloquently put it, “”Remember why we do this. Remember your promise to these most innocent of creatures. We promise to take unwanted animals, heal their wounds, offer them love, and hold them close as they journey ahead over the Rainbow Bridge. This we must promise.”
