The Plight of the American Mustang

At present, about 50,000 horses have been rounded up from public lands by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and are now confined in overcrowded pens. These horses are expensive to keep and difficult to adopt out. One key objective of War Horse Creek is to change the public perception of the mustang from tragic burden to highly valuable resource.

By raising awareness, we will foster more humane treatment, more adoptions and more effective herd management on public ranges where these horses thrived for centuries. Many mustangs descend from horses bred for the military, that were later abandoned to the wilderness when they were no longer valued. These tough, resilient animals have a kinships with the veterans who come through our program.

It is appropriate that the descendants of horses that carried our forefathers into battle, will now help our veterans return home.

Discover our Sponsorship Program

Here at War Horse Creek, we hope to expand our facilities and rescue more mustangs in need. Mustangs are very costly to train and care for. One way you can help is through our Sponsorship Program.

Consider sponsoring one of our mustangs — for yourself or as a gift. Your one-time or monthly donation will go directly to support the mustang that you choose to sponsor.

Once you donate, our horsemanship team will send you regular updates on how your mustang is doing and what he/she is up to here at the Sanctuary.
